Singer Kelly Clarkson and the Brooklyn specialty shop Art of Play have traded public accusations after the musician compared her shopping experience at the store to the movie Pretty Woman. The exchange unfolded across social media platforms, drawing widespread attention and dividing internet users between supporters of the artist and defenders of the local business.

The Initial Accusation and Movie Comparison

The public disagreement began when Clarkson shared a post on X detailing her visit to the New York City shop. The singer stated that she had driven to Brooklyn with several items in mind to purchase, but instead felt dismissed by the staff. She claimed she was looked at as if she could not afford the merchandise and was told an employee could find something comparable for her.

Clarkson compared the treatment to the famous scene from the film Pretty Woman, in which Julia Roberts’ character Vivian Ward is brushed off by a luxury boutique salesperson due to her appearance. Calling out the business by name, Clarkson expressed frustration over the encounter and stated that the shop had lost a major sale.

Art of Play's Response and Explanation

Following the post, Art of Play released a statement on Instagram addressing the backlash and offering their side of the interaction. The shop explained that Clarkson had inquired about a one-of-a-kind singing and dancing bird automaton named Molly, which serves as a shop mascot and is permanently attached to the wall. According to the store, the installation was not for sale.

The business stated that employees attempted to offer alternatives, explaining that a nearly identical automaton could be obtained from the creator for $15,000, or a different singing bird option could be purchased and taken home that day for $2,000. In a follow-up post, the store noted that Clarkson spent about five minutes inside and ultimately did not purchase anything.

Clarkson's Rebuttal and Store Fallout

Clarkson quickly disputed the store's narrative in subsequent posts on X, calling the staff not only rude but also dishonest. The singer maintained that a price tag was hanging on the wall near the singing bird and argued that the conversation described by the management did not happen the way they claimed. She also pushed back against criticisms that she does not support small businesses, asserting that local shops do not get a free pass to treat customers poorly.

The public dispute quickly generated intense online reaction. Art of Play reported receiving a surge of negative attention from users who had never visited the location, while also thanking friends and local patrons who stepped forward to offer support and share their own positive past experiences with the store.

The back-and-forth has left the internet divided, with fans echoing Clarkson's disappointment alongside locals defending the specialty shop. As the discussion continues, neither party has indicated further direct communication beyond their public statements.
