Michael Douglas Admits Secret Romance With Romancing the Stone Co-Star Kathleen Turner
After four decades of denial, Michael Douglas has confessed to having a secret romance with his Romancing the Stone co-star Kathleen Turner on the 1984 set.

Michael Douglas has finally copped to a secret romance with his Romancing the Stone co-star Kathleen Turner after four decades of public denial. In an excerpt of his upcoming memoir One Helluva Ride, shared by People, the 82-year-old actor opened up about the intense connection they shared while filming the 1984 adventure movie in the jungle.
A Secret On-Set Romance
The pair were immediately drawn to each other and fell hard, though they managed to keep their relationship hidden from director Robert Zemeckis, co-star Danny DeVito, and the rest of the crew. Describing their bond as much more than a brief fling, Douglas wrote that they connected first as friends, then as co-stars, and ultimately as lovers. Following exhausting days of shooting, he would sneak into her hotel room after everyone else had fallen asleep.
At the time of the filming, Douglas was married to Diandra Luker, with whom he shares a son named Cameron. According to the actor, he and Luker were separated and both having extramarital affairs, with Douglas noting he also had a fling with the movie's screenwriter, Diane Thomas. Despite the separation, the liaison came to an abrupt halt when Luker and Cameron visited the set in Mexico.
Confrontation and the End of the Affair
During the visit, Luker grew suspicious and eventually found herself alone with Turner, making it clear that she and Douglas were still married and that her view of their separation terms differed from Douglas's perspective. The conversation gave Turner pause because she did not want to interfere in an active relationship, leading her and Douglas to call things off. Douglas recalled that he subsequently went back to Diandra for the sake of Cameron, though he reflected that they should not have reunited.
The former co-stars maintained an official story for decades, publicly denying that anything romantic ever happened beyond intense on-screen chemistry and heavy flirtation. Douglas explained in his memoir that they kept the liaison under wraps all this time to protect his ex-wife and son, admitting that their long-standing public narrative of total platonic restraint was simply a lie. Turner's representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the excerpt's release.
Looking Back After Four Decades
Both actors have dropped hints about their intense dynamic over the years. Turner previously told People in 2021 that she was yearning for him while acknowledging his marriage, describing the situation as wonderful sexual tension where they both knew they wanted each other but could not have it. She also recounted in a Guardian interview that Diandra's visit and clear stance on Douglas's availability brought an end to the romance because she refused to get involved in another woman's relationship.
Despite the abrupt end to their romantic liaison, Turner and Douglas successfully reunited on professional projects over the years. They returned to solid ground to film the 1985 sequel The Jewel of the Nile, and later collaborated on War of the Roses and The Kominsky Method. Douglas eventually divorced Luker in 1995 and married Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000, while Turner was married to Jay Weiss from 1984 until 2007.
The revelation finally confirms long-running speculation about the off-screen dynamic between the two iconic actors during the peak of their collaborative partnership in the 1980s.
