John Goodman opens up about his body being messed up after massive weight loss
Actor John Goodman opens up about adjusting to his dramatic 200-pound weight loss, discussing body image, career reflections, and gym routines.

John Goodman recently opened up about his physical transformation, revealing that his body feels too altered following his dramatic weight loss. The 74-year-old actor discussed the challenges of his physical changes during a podcast appearance, noting how his appearance has impacted his personal outlook and professional life.
Reflecting on Physical Changes
During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Roseanne alum shared candid thoughts about his body. Goodman recalled previously refusing a nude scene for his role in The Righteous Gemstones because of his physical transformation. He stated that he felt his body was too messed up from losing all that weight to appear naked on screen. At his heaviest, the actor weighed 400 pounds before embarking on a massive weight-loss journey that ultimately totaled a 200-pound reduction.
Goodman also admitted that he is still trying to get used to his face following the substantial physical change. He explained that he often views himself one way mentally, only to be surprised when he catches his reflection. In a separate interview with the Sunday Times, the actor echoed similar sentiments, stating that he still feels like a fat guy despite his slimmer frame. However, he acknowledged the practical benefits of the transformation, noting that it is nice to be able to shop in regular clothing stores again.
Public Scrutiny and Routine
When addressing the public fascination surrounding his 200-pound weight loss, Goodman adopted a pragmatic perspective. He noted that since he works in the entertainment industry, public discussion about his appearance is fair game up to a point, though he chooses to ignore most of it. Maintaining the slim figure requires deliberate effort on his part. Goodman shared that he has to force himself to go to the gym regularly, admitting that if left to his own preferences, he would skip working out entirely. His journey in recent years involved hiring a personal trainer and cutting sugar from his diet.
Early Career and Self-Sabotage
Looking back at his early days in the industry, the Conners actor recalled weighing around 225 pounds and being in good shape from daily running in New York City. Reflecting on how his career unfolded, Goodman expressed that his weight may have impacted his professional trajectory. He shared a suspicion that a lot of it might have involved self-sabotage, reflecting on whether his physical state and choices influenced the work he took on during those years.
Goodman continues to make public appearances, recently showing off his slim figure at the Digger premiere in September wearing a black suit, striped shirt, and gray tie. While he continues to navigate the adjustments required by his new appearance, the actor remains busy with his ongoing career in Hollywood.
