Adam Lambert Shocks 2026 VMAs With George Michael Tribute Finale

Adam Lambert made a surprise appearance at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, taking the stage to cap off a star-studded musical tribute honoring late singer George Michael. The awards ceremony took place on Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Snoop Dogg and broadcast live on CBS and MTV while streaming on Paramount+ Premium.

The musical segment was organized to honor George Michael, who died in December 2016 at the age of 53 due to heart failure. The tribute arrived timed to nearly 40 years since the 1987 release of his landmark solo album, *Faith*. Organizers noted that the milestone precedes a live album release for the Faith tour set for November, alongside an upcoming feature-length film about the late artist, songwriter and record producer.

The tribute opened with an introduction from Orville Peck before Sombr took the stage wearing Michael's actual customized leather jacket. Sombr performed the title track from Faith before transitioning into another major hit from the album, "Father Figure." The performance then shifted to Raye, who delivered a soulful rendition of Michael's Aretha Franklin duet, "I Knew You Were Waiting." Raye's performance featured golden lighting, smoke and sepia-toned visuals. Following Raye, the broadcast focused on a saxophone player introducing the iconic opening notes of the Wham! hit "Careless Whisper," which Teddy Swims performed from an elevated platform surrounded by searchlights.

Although Lambert had not been announced as part of the lineup prior to the event, he strutted out from backstage as the unannounced final performer of the segment. Lambert took over the stage to deliver a triumphant rendition of the late singer's 1990 single "Freedom '90," which is widely remembered for its famous supermodel-filled music video, bringing the multi-artist tribute to a high-energy close.

The evening featured several other major milestones and recognitions alongside the George Michael celebration. Taylor Swift received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honor and won Video of the Year, extending her record at the ceremony. Swift's latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, features a reimagining of George Michael's classic hit "Father Figure." Additional moments during the Los Angeles broadcast included a tribute to Dolly Parton led by Kacey Musgraves, as well as Nirvana being recognized with the Video Vanguard Award. Throughout his own career, George Michael won four VMAs and received the Video Vanguard Award in 1989.
