Michael Douglas has revealed that he eventually refused to appear on David Letterman’s late-night talk show because he felt the host went too far with him during an interview segment. The actor shares the details of his falling out with the legendary television host in his bombshell memoir, which is available on bookshelves now.

The Wall Street star, 82, explains in the book that he had previously been a regular guest on the program. However, his willingness to participate changed permanently after a specific incident involving a commercial and an unexpected line of questioning from the host.

A Nasty Sense of Humor

According to Douglas, David Letterman had a real nasty sense of humor and crossed a line during a segment by airing a commercial filmed by the actor's late mother, Diana Dill, without any prior warning. The talk show host then started grilling the Oscar winner about the vintage footage on air.

Douglas writes that the ambush made it feel like the host was making fun of him and his family. Following that particular broadcast, whenever the producers of the show reached out to request that he return as a guest, the Fatal Attraction star always refused their invitations.

Although Letterman reportedly wrote personal letters to apologize for the incident, Douglas notes that his feelings did not change at the time. He felt strongly that the host had broken his trust during the broadcast.

Clearing the Air After Cancer Diagnosis

The long-standing feud finally came to an end years later following Michael Douglas receiving a cancer diagnosis in 2010. The actor writes that Letterman proved to be respectful during a subsequent appearance while asking sincere and sympathetic questions about his health.

The Ant-Man actor shares that it felt exceptionally nice to clear the air with Dave after so much time had passed. For the first time, he realized that life is simply too short to hold on to lingering feuds and carry the emotional weight of old grudges.

Revelations in the Memoir

The memoir contains a number of other stunning revelations from the actor's life and career leading up to its publication. Alongside his reflections on television history, the book covers personal topics including his past relationship history.

Among the stories included is how he first met Catherine Zeta-Jones at the Deauville American Film Festival in 1998. Douglas recalls famously telling her the night they met that he would be the father of her children, a bold remark that initially prompted her to walk out.

The decision to let go of past grievances marked a significant shift in perspective for the veteran actor. By releasing the heavy burden of revenge and unresolved tension, Douglas found closure on a television chapter that had remained fractured for decades.
