Justin Cooper Recalls Disturbing Prison Fan Mail Received at Age 8 After Liar, Liar Success

Former child star Justin Cooper, best recognized for playing Jim Carrey’s young son in the 1997 comedy Liar, Liar, recently opened up about a disturbing aspect of his early fame. At just 8 years old, the actor discovered that his sudden breakthrough in Hollywood brought unwanted attention from behind bars.

During a recent appearance on the Not So Little Rascals podcast, Justin Cooper spoke with co-hosts Jordan Warkol and Blake Collins about the realities of growing up in the spotlight. Beyond the mail intercepted by his mother, Cooper noted that everyday life in his hometown presented its own set of minor intrusions. He admitted that the attention probably annoyed his family a little bit more than it bothered him, recalling how local residents would line up at their neighborhood buffet just to ask for his autograph while he was trying to eat with his relatives.

The Tom Shadyac-directed comedy Liar, Liar became a massive hit, starring Cooper alongside Jim Carrey, Maura Tierney, Cary Elwes and Jennifer Tilly. For his memorable performance as the boy whose birthday wish forces his fast-talking lawyer father to tell the truth for 24 hours, Justin Cooper earned a Young Artist Award nomination for best performance in a feature film by an actor aged 10 or under.
