Jessica Biel is making it clear that if her eldest son wants to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, he will have to earn his own opportunities rather than having them handed to him because of his famous family. The actress shares Silas and a second child with her husband, Justin Timberlake. Silas recently made his feature film debut alongside his mother in Matchbox: The Movie, marking his first official acting credit.

Navigating Hollywood Conversations

During an appearance on the Great Chat Show hosted by Josh Smith, Biel discussed how she and her husband navigate the entertainment world with their children. When asked if the family talks about the realities of Hollywood, Biel confirmed that it is a constantly evolving conversation in their household. She noted that Silas has an innate interest in music and acting, alongside a natural comedy streak and a theatrical, silly quality that has led him to express a desire to become an actor.

How the Matchbox Opportunity Arose

The chance for Silas to appear in Matchbox: The Movie came about after producer Jules Daly approached Biel with the idea. Biel initially had reservations because she and Timberlake try to keep their children away from the public eye. However, because Silas was scheduled to visit her in Budapest for seven weeks and had expressed interest in acting, they decided to let him take the tiny part as a nice experience to look forward to.

Setting Strict Boundaries on Acting

Despite allowing him to take on the small role, Biel emphasized that she drew a firm line regarding his involvement. She told the host that she would not have permitted him to take the part if it involved a heavy workload or a major monologue. Biel stated that he could not just take a part simply for being her son, stressing that larger roles must be earned and that the family is not going to hand out a series of opportunities based on lineage.

A Reality Check on Set Life

The young actor received an immediate reality check during his first day on set when he realized how much waiting is involved in filmmaking. Biel recalled that Silas did not work at all on his first day and grew quite upset about sitting around for hours. She used the moment to test his dedication by asking if he still wanted to act after experiencing a twelve-hour wait. According to the actress, it proved to be the best lesson, as Silas returned the next day and successfully completed his work.

Married in 2012, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake welcomed Silas in 2015 and later had their second child, Phineas, in 2020. While their eldest son has taken his first steps onto the silver screen, his parents remain firm that future projects will require the same dedication and hard work expected of any other aspiring actor.
