Ian McKellen Shares Heartbreaking Tribute After Death of Longtime Pal Patrick Stewart
Sir Ian McKellen has shared an emotional tribute to his longtime friend and fellow actor Patrick Stewart, who died at the age of 86.

Sir Ian McKellen has shared a deeply emotional tribute following the death of his longtime friend and colleague, Patrick Stewart, who passed away at the age of 86. The legendary English actors shared a bond that spanned more than fifty years, originating from their early days as ambitious performers with the Royal Shakespeare Company and stretching across iconic cinematic franchises.
A Lifelong Friendship Forged on Stage and Screen
In a heartfelt statement shared to Instagram, McKellen reflected on Stewart's roots and character. He noted that his late friend was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, praising the stern honesty and lack of half-truths that made him a man to rely on and admire. McKellen recalled first crossing paths with Stewart half a century ago when they were both starting out in the theater.
The two English actors formed a legendary professional partnership and personal friendship that eventually brought them together in the blockbuster “X-Men” franchise at the turn of the millennium. As super-powered frenemies Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto, they appeared together in multiple films across the series, cementing their status as pop culture icons alongside their distinguished classical theater careers.
Advice Against Hollywood and Trailer Bonding
Their decades-long bond included memorable professional crossroads and shared downtime. In his statement, McKellen recalled meeting Stewart in central London years prior when Stewart shared news of an offer to take on a leading role in “Star Trek.” McKellen admitted he originally urged his friend to think twice about risking his UK stage career to avoid getting lost in Hollywood for years. Stewart ultimately took the risk, which McKellen acknowledged with gratitude.
Stewart previously detailed how their deep friendship solidified behind the scenes of the superhero films. In a past interview, Stewart explained that they spent considerable time hanging out in adjoining trailers, drinking tea and catching up during breaks in filming. Stewart also revealed in his 2023 memoir that McKellen strongly attempted to stop him from taking the iconic television role out of concern for his important theater work in the United Kingdom.
Tributes From Co-Stars and Studios
Following news of Stewart's passing, tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry, including from Marvel Studios and fellow cast members. Hugh Jackman, who starred alongside Stewart as Wolverine, remembered him as one of the true greats of stage and screen. Jackman stated that he learned a massive amount from his veteran co-star and would miss him for all of his days. Marvel Studios also honored Stewart, highlighting how his gravitas and profundity in the role helped transform superhero storytelling for more than 25 years.
Stewart remained dedicated to his craft until the end. In what marked his final interview just three months before his death, he expressed that he still received interesting offers, loved being challenged by new work, and could never imagine officially retiring from acting. Stewart's final on-screen appearance will be seen in “Avengers: Doomsday” this coming December.
