HGTV Star Tarek El Moussa Defends Buying $150K BMW for 16-Year-Old Daughter
Flip or Flop alum Tarek El Moussa opened up about gifting his teenage daughter a luxury SUV, explaining her impressive achievements and safety priorities.

Tarek El Moussa has defended purchasing a $150,000 BMW X5 for his 16-year-old daughter, Taylor, insisting that she thoroughly earned the luxury vehicle through her hard work and academic success. The Flip or Flop alum addressed the high-end present during an appearance on the Money Rehab podcast on Wednesday, detailing the specific reasons behind the extravagant gift.
Academic Achievements and Safety Priorities
During the podcast interview, the television personality outlined his daughter's accomplishments to explain why she deserved the expensive ride. He noted that Taylor maintained a 4.2 GPA and served as the MVP of her freshman soccer team. According to the proud father, she is a fantastic kid who worked extremely hard and did not even ask for the luxury automobile.
He also revealed that the teenager would have been completely happy with a used Honda. Instead, purchasing the high-end BMW X5 was partially driven by his own peace of mind as a parent. The television personality marveled that the vehicle is built like a tank, emphasizing that he feels comforted knowing she is driving a very safe car that she loves.
Family Collaboration and Past Generosity
The expensive silver SUV was originally unveiled back in August when Tarek El Moussa posted a video on Instagram showing the teen being surprised with the vehicle. The footage captured the young driver reacting in shock and wiping away tears of disbelief. Notably, the surprise effort was a collaborative family event that brought together Tarek, his current wife Heather El Moussa, and his ex-wife Christina Haack. Tarek humorously acknowledged the successful collaboration in his social media caption, expressing amazement that the three of them actually managed to pull off the surprise together. Beyond his daughter's car, the podcast host also reflected on his own history of extravagant automotive gifts, recalling how he previously bought Heather a white Ferrari on their second date after she mentioned it was her dream car.
Contrasting Upbringings and Financial Perspectives
Addressing the criticism surrounding the luxury purchase, the real estate expert pushed back against the idea that his daughter is a spoiled brat. He pointed out that Taylor has grown up surrounded by privilege, noting that she was already flying in private jets when she was roughly one year old. He contrasted her upbringing with his own childhood, explaining that he did not grow up with money and therefore developed an obsession with material things because he never had them. Because his daughter has always had access to things, he explained, she looks at material possessions differently than he does. He also mentioned that he is already being responsible about her financial future by making investments on her behalf.
The television personality shares Taylor and 11-year-old son Brayden with his ex-wife Christina Haack, with whom he was married for seven years before their 2016 separation. Despite their split, the former couple continued co-hosting their hit HGTV series until it concluded in 2022 after 10 seasons. Tarek and Heather El Moussa also share a three-year-old son named Tristan, who was born in 2023.
