Erika Kirk Recalls Believing Husband Charlie Might Survive Shooting

Erika Kirk is reflecting on the tragic death of her husband, Charlie Kirk, one year after he was shot and killed in Utah. In a new profile with Vanity Fair, the 37-year-old opened up about reviewing surveillance footage from the day of the attack, which was presented during suspect Tyler Robinson’s preliminary hearing over the summer.

The incident unfolded in September 2025 while Erika was attending an appointment with her mother. She received an urgent phone call from Turning Point USA chief of staff Mikey McCoy, informing her that Charlie had been shot. Her immediate response was to ask whether he was alive. Although Charlie died almost immediately, Erika stated that his heart was beating intermittently at the time, leading her to believe he would survive.

By the time Erika arrived at the hospital in Utah, however, her husband had passed away. Charlie was 31 years old at the time of his death, and the couple shared two young children. According to Erika, the operating surgeon informed her that the hospital exhausted all available blood supplies in their efforts to save his life.

Despite warnings from authorities, Erika insisted on seeing her husband's body. She recalled her exchange with a police officer at the scene, stating that she wanted to see what happened and just wanted to kiss her husband goodbye after missing their morning departure. When she finally saw him, she remembered that he had a distinct expression on his face, noting that it was not a sad look.

She previously shared a similar recollection during her first television interview following the tragedy on Jesse Watters Primetime in November 2025. During that appearance, she noted that he was still warm with his eyes slightly open and maintained a smirk on his face when she went to kiss him.

In the wake of the tragedy, Erika stepped forward to take over operations at Turning Point USA. While she has remained visible in the public eye regarding her grief and her new responsibilities, she noted during her interview that she previously stayed very quiet behind the scenes of the organization.

When asked about broader discussions surrounding the case and related matters, Erika explained that her primary focus remains on her family and the organization. She stated that her current mental bandwidth is dedicated entirely to honoring her husband, caring for her children, and building Turning Point into everything it can be.
