Music icon Billy Joel has shared a candid update regarding his health, revealing that he is currently unable to drive or perform following a diagnosis with a rare brain disorder. In a new interview published on Thursday, the 77-year-old singer opened up about how the condition has significantly impacted his everyday routine and forced him to step away from the stage.

Facing a Rare Brain Disorder

Last year, Billy Joel received a diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, a condition that occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain. According to medical definitions, this fluid accumulation can disrupt cognitive functioning.

Earlier, the Grammy Award winner experienced a fall during a performance in March at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Montville, Connecticut, which led to the eventual cancellation of his remaining concerts. Last month, Joel shared that he underwent surgery to have a shunt implanted in his brain after learning it could help improve his memory and balance.

Stepping Away From Driving and Motorcycles

Because of his diagnosis, Billy Joel stated that he is no longer allowed behind the wheel. The condition makes driving unsafe, leading the music legend to turn transportation duties over to others.

As a result of no longer driving, Joel is currently auctioning off more than 70 of his motorcycles. Explaining the decision, the musician noted that he is now in his 70s and realized he could no longer ride as frequently as he once did. He added that he wanted to let the collection go after enjoying the customization, modifications, and anonymity that riding provided over the years.

Uncertainty Surrounding Future Concerts

Performing live is also currently on hold for the "Piano Man" singer. Joel explained that his neurologist advised against continuing shows right now, comparing the physical impact of a concert to experiencing a concussion due to the intense volume, lighting, and stage energy.

Joel noted that he must now undergo a series of further tests before he can know whether he will ever be able to return to performing. Despite the restrictions, he expressed a desire to get back on stage if possible.

Moving Forward With Treatment

Although the health challenges have brought major changes to his lifestyle, Billy Joel noted that the shunt surgery has already improved his memory, balance, and overall ability to function. He continues to attend physical therapy and follows his medical team's advice closely.

Reassuring his supporters as he navigates his ongoing recovery and treatment, the singer emphasized his resilience and stated that he is still here.

The documented updates provide a clear look at how Billy Joel is handling his health diagnosis and adapting his daily life, while medical evaluations will ultimately determine his future on stage.
